 Picture 1
Here are the tools used to notch the rafters. I used a drill to make a
pilot hole for the jigsaw in the corner of the notch.

 Picture 2
All the rafters are in place. Note the one foot wall entension in the
upper right of the picture.

 Picture 3
A skylight will go here. Note the double headers at the top and bottom of
the opening (left and right in the picture). The extra 2x6 on the sides
provide a nailing surface for
the skylight's flange. The opening for the skylight is 22.5 inches.

 Picture 4
The rafters are in place and ready for the roof decking.
|
 Picture 5
The sheating, all 6.25 4x8 foot sheets of oriented strand,
are affixed to the tops of the rafters. I put 1x6 trim board on the
front of the rafter ends. Note the gutter
apron (drip edge) along the top of the sheathing edge. This will hopefully
keep any water from seeping onto the wood rafters.

 Picture 6
Tar paper covers all of the roof. It still needs to be trimmed around
the edges. I will trim it after the asphalt shingles are up.
|
 Picture 7
Finally, all the shingles are up. They still need to be trimmed, though.

 Picture 8
It's obvious I will never get a job as a roofer, but it should be good
enough to keep the water out. Here's the skylight from the top.
|
 Picture 9
Here's the completed skylight as seen from the inside, minus any
internal "finishing" I may do. Note the rain drops. The rain came
only minutes before I was finishing up the final shingles on the roof! The
dark area in the skylight are tree branches.
